Metal components, such as steel and aluminum, are commonly used in institutional and office furniture design. Steel is a heavy, solid material that improves durability, whereas aluminum is lighter and allows the object to move freely.

Since 1992, Metal Works of High Point has been providing metal fabrication solutions and services to various industries, including institutional and office furniture, construction, power generation, and many more. Our expert team brings hundreds of years of combined experience to a facility fully equipped with cutting-edge equipment and software, allowing us to develop customized, cost-effective solutions.

Metal Component Manufacturing Services

Custom furniture manufacturing is an excellent way to create unique parts for office and institutional furniture. Metal Works manufactures custom metal furniture parts, from individual components to weldments and assemblies  As part of our advanced metal fabrication capabilities, we offer laser cutting, CNC forming, machining, welding, finishing, and assembly.

Laser Cutting Services

Laser cutting is a thermal process that cuts or engraves sheet metal with a concentrated, high-powered beam of coherent light. Metal Works can meet laser cutting requirements with 3-axis laser cutting systems, automated sheet loading and unloading, and a 24-hour operational system that runs both our CO2 and fiber optic lasers.

CNC Bending & Forming

Bending and forming are processes used to shape sheet metal and other types of metal components. Metal Works is a highly experienced provider of custom metal components, stampings, and turnkey CNC forming and bending services. Our cutting-edge CNC press brakes have movement capabilities along five axes and press capacities of up to 170 tons. This allows our team to produce custom precision parts from a variety of metals to tolerances of 0.015 in.

In addition to our CNC forming and bending services, we specialize in panel bending using a high-quality  panel bender to achieve exceptional results for every project. Our team has extensive experience serving a diverse range of industries, including material handling, appliances, telecommunications, transportation, construction, aerial lifts, and power generation.

CNC Machining

CNC machining entails milling, turning, and grinding to produce metal components with high tolerance and accuracy. At Metal Works, we take pride in our facility, which includes CNC machines for high-volume milling, drilling, tapping, countersinking, and turning.

Welding

Welding is a technique that uses fusion to secure two pieces of metal with similar melting points and compositions. Metal Works provides industrial welding services such as robotic welding, spot welding, tungsten inert gas (TIG), and metal inert gas (MIG). Our D1.3 certified welders design and manufacture solutions that meet customers’ expectations using advanced technologies and 3D software.

Powder Coating

Powder coating sprays plastic powder particles onto metal furniture parts. These charged particles are heated in an infrared cure to smooth out the layer and fully fuse it to the component. At Metal Works, we provide long-lasting powder coating solutions with decorative and protective finishes for precision components utilizing a 5-stage zirconium wash system, two automated powder coating booths for applications needing primer and top coat and infrared cure ovens.

Institutional/Office Applications of Metal Components

To ensure durability and sturdiness, many institutional and office furnishings incorporate metal components. Examples include:

  • Seating and desk components
  • Custom filing and electrical cabinets
  • Dividers
  • Beds and serving carts
  • Computer furniture and bookcases
  • Chair arms and legs

Material Options for Metal Furniture Manufacturing

  • Mild carbon steel: This ferrous metal made of iron and carbon is a low-cost material with good magnetic properties suitable for most general industrial applications.
  • Galvanized steel: This ferrous metal combines steel’s strength and machinability with the zinc-iron coating’s corrosion protection which greatly reduces the onset of rust.
  • Stainless steel: This ferrous metal is mostly rustproof and the easy-to-clean option is ideal for sterile environments, such as residential and commercial kitchens.
  • Aluminum: This non-ferrous metal is lightweight and is suitable for office furniture because of its rust-resistance properties.
  • Copper: This malleable, ductile non-ferrous metal has excellent heat and electrical conductivity.
  • Brass: This low-friction, soft, non-ferrous metal can easily be laser cut, bent, drilled, machined, sawed, and punched.

Custom Metal Fabrication for Furniture Components

The Metal Works team has extensive professional experience in fabrication, machining, and finishing. We offer turnkey contract metal fabrication solutions for various industries and accommodate medium to high-volume orders, with lead times ranging from four to eight weeks, depending on the scope of your project.
