At Metal Works of High Point, we offer a variety of industrial welding services, including robotic welding, spot welding, tungsten inert gas (TIG), and metal inert gas (MIG) welding. Our professional welders use advanced technologies and 3D software to design and fabricate solutions that will meet or exceed your expectations.

The most common types of welding for industrial fabrication are MIG and TIG welding:

  • MIG welding is a manual and versatile welding method capable of joining a variety of metals. A consumable wire electrode is heated and melts in conjunction with the workpiece material, producing a strong bond to join two disparate sections of metal.
  • TIG welding method uses heat from an arc between the workpiece and a non-consumable electrode made from tungsten, which is known for its ability to withstand extreme heat. This type of welding requires a high level of manual skill and is often automated. TIG welding is more effective with non-ferrous metals that are difficult to weld with other methods.

Benefits of Welding

Welding is the preferred choice for joining metals used in a variety of applications. It delivers a permanent bond between metals, often with a joint that is even stronger than the workpiece material itself depending on the filler material. Welding is typically a cost-effective solution, especially when MIG welding is possible. Most welding processes are relatively quick, which reduces project costs through savings in labor and time. With many types of welding available, there is a suitable solution for virtually any application on-site or in the field.

Types of Welding

There are numerous welding techniques. The four main types of welding we offer at Metal Works include:

  • Robotic welding. An advanced welding method using an automated MIG welding system that delivers precise and repeatable results.
  • MIG welding. MIG welding is one of the most popular welding methods for sheet metal and very straight-forward welding jobs. This method is used widely in construction, automotive, and more.
  • TIG welding. The non-consumable tungsten electrode used in TIG welding is capable of creating strong welds on thin metal parts. This method is often ideal in outdoor settings with strong winds that may interfere with other welding methods. TIG welding is preferred for many non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper, and magnesium. It is often used in aerospace, process piping, and automotive applications.
  • Spot welding. This method of resistance welding is used to weld two sheets of metal together using heat and pressure. Two copper-alloy electrodes fuse the materials with high-heat as the work pieces are held firmly together with a high amount of pressure. Spot welding is best suited to low carbon steels and alloys made from nickel or titanium.

Welding Applications

Several industries make use of welded parts.

  • MIG welding is suitable for nearly every metal, so it has a broad spectrum of uses across many industries. It is the most common choice for steel structures and fabricating pressure vessels. The automotive sector frequently uses MIG welding in body work and part repairs. It is also widely used in home improvement for its simplicity and easy cleanup. MIG welding is best suited for thicker metals and larger parts.
  • TIG welding is the primary fabrication method in the automotive industry. Automotive manufacturers use this method on the assembly line to form strong bonds on metal frames and between critical automotive parts. TIG welding is also used widely in military and aerospace applications on naval ships, rockets, aircraft, and space shuttles. This method is particularly well-suited to welding thin metals and small parts.
  • Robotic MIG welding is ideal for large part production runs that require a high rate of accuracy and repeatability between parts.
  • Spot welding is often used by the automotive sector to join steel parts in vehicle frames. Spot welding is also widely used for connecting electronic components.
